Classical Photography

Prints

This page provides some information about the genre of photography represented in the “Gallery” part of this website, about the photographic techniques, and the printing process I use to create the images. Also included is some practical information about viewing, shipping, etc.

The Creative Process

The “classical” or “straight” photography uses the classical B&W process which as a result yields a B&W photograph (typically of a fairly large size). While originally all stages of the process were done fully in analog (i.e., exposing a film, developing it to create negatives, and printing on photo paper in darkroom), digital photography today offers various other possibilities for working with combination of analog and digital techniques.
In my work I typically use large format analog camera (using sheet film) to acquire the images on film in highest possible fidelity. The film is then scanned into a digital file with very high resolution, which can then be used to clean, crop, edit and manipulate the image (the ”post-processing”). Finally, the digital file is printed using one of the large-format digital printers (inkjet or laser). Variety of papers and ink systems is available. Their choice can also produce subtle differences in the look of a final image.
The process described is offering large-format high resolution, flexibility and the convenience of the fully digital workflow. Some of my early analog work (now 50 years old) remains still unmatched (in my opinion) in resolution and tonal range of the B&W photos.

Viewing The Photos

Viewing on the website

The gallery of the selected prints is presented on the website as a series of low-resolution (thumbnail) images. As such, these are poor representations of the photos. To appreciate the detail, resolution and tonal range of the prints would need viewing the original or an enlargement (typically 17x22 inch or larger). The viewer can use the zoom on his/her device, but the detail will be limited (intentionally).
The gallery is organized into folders (“rooms”), each containing one subject, exhibition, photo essay, etc. Each group is introduced by notes. Each image has a code assigned to it. It consists of two or three letters identifying the folder, and a serial number identifying a print it that folder. In the future, folders can be added for new work. The viewers should refer to the identifiers when discussing specific prints.

Viewing in a studio

The best setting for viewing prints (and any visual art for that matter) is in a gallery setting with proper installation, lighting etc. The photos in the Canadian Rockies folder of the Gallery have been exhibited in May 2022 in Calgary, but such opportunity will be limited. If you are living in Calgary or have an opportunity to visit, a private showing can be arranged in my studio. This will allow you to see also other work not on the website. We would be happy to arrange for individual or group visit. Please contact us by filling the contacts page.

After Choosing A Print

Once you found the print that talks to you, some practical aspects need to be decided. We, together with the printer, can provide help to make recommendations. Please note that we sell only unframed photographs.

Printing

Paper manufacturers offer different papers that can provide slightly different look. Also, the printer will recommend the best paper and appropriate printing process (e.g., carbon ink printing as opposed to conventional inkjet). For many prints from the catalog these issues have been dealt with as a part of the creating the final image.

Size

Typical size is 17 x 22 inches or similar. Many of the prints can be enlarged to much larger size (e.g., 30 x 40 “) but one needs to consider the wall space where they will be displayed. Note that the size of a framed photograph will be somewhat larger than the print, depending on type of frame.

Shipping

Ideal for any artwork is to hand carry it or ship it flat in a portfolio. We can also ship safely in large diameter (5 ½ “) high strength Kraft tubes.
